The origin of the handshake is almost certainly magical, espically when it was used to signify the closing of an agreement-that is, the beginning of a contract. It is a wonderfully potent moment: the touching of palms, the mutal tensing of muscles, the momentary feeling of defenselness, and, above all, the confidence and trust demonstrated by the extended hand.
